A. POSITION PURPOSE
The Assistant Dean of Advancement for the Law School plays a critical role in the school's efforts to secure resources for its strategic funding priorities, including capital projects, student scholarships and research, while deepening its relationships with alumni, parents and friends of the school and the University. In furtherance of the law school's vision and strategic plan, the Assistant Dean designs and implements strategies for increased engagement with both current and prospective major donors. The Assistant Dean also creates and executes donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans to achieve the law school's fundraising goals.
The Assistant Dean of Advancement reports to the Dean of the Law School and builds and manages a portfolio of approximately 75-100 major gift prospects. The Assistant Dean is responsible for the implementation of a highly focused program to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects targeted for gifts between $100,000 and $5,000,000. He/she works closely with the Dean of the Law School, senior university administrators, fundraising colleagues in University Relations, and other schools/departments on campus to identify funding opportunities and develop prospect-to-donor strategies.
B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Advancement
Develop, lead, and execute individual annual plans and strategies solicitations to secure major gifts ($100,000+) for the law school annually.
Secure and conduct personal face-to-face visits to qualify, engage, solicit, and steward the university's major donors and prospects.
Lead the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of approximately 75-100 high net worth prospects ensuring that each receives regular and strategic contact not overseen by University Relations.
Meet dollar and activity metrics set in consultation with the Dean of the Law School to reach the overall fundraising goals of $5M in annual support. Interact with deans, directors, university, and law school administrators in the form of fundraising strategy development, meeting and event attendance, travel planning and execution, and written briefings as they pertain to assigned prospects and prospect development.
Work with Asst Dean of External Relations and the Director of Strategic Communication and Outreach to produce well written, accurate and timely correspondence such as comprehensive proposals, reports and briefings in support of cultivating, soliciting and stewarding assigned prospects.
Track and record activities as they relate to assigned prospects using the University's constituent management software, including contact reports, gift agreements, and stewardship activities. Serve as the point of contact for centers or schools on campus relative to major gift fundraising.
Provide high level direction and support for the Dean of the Law School and work closely with the Dean's team and Office staff.
Serve as main point of contact for the Law Advisory Board. Plan LAB meetings, logistics and agenda in partnership with the Dean and the LAB chair.
Assist in board development (Law Advisory Board and Alumni Ambassadors) and recruitment.
Partner with Asst Dean of External Relations to manage the department budget.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission of Santa Clara Law and Santa Clara University.
Team Management
Participate as a co-leader of the External Relations team, sharing information, collaborating with colleagues in a respectful and professional manner, and contributing to a healthy and positive work environment.
Oversee the execution and management of signature events, including the Annual Celebration of Achievement & Inclusive Excellence, Day of Giving, the Kasner Symposium and Law Reunion, working closely with external relations team members assigned to manage each event.
Oversee the Administrative Team for the External Relations Office; ensure the work product of the student workers and administrative team is properly distributed amongst team members
Work closely with Administrative Assistant to ensure timely execution of advancement communications and stewardship pieces (including donor thank you letters, gift processing, student scholarship recipient profiles, Dean's briefings and LAB minutes)
C. WORK DIRECTION
Reports to the Dean of the Law School.
Supervises Alumni Relations team members, including the Office and Events Manager and the Alumni Relations Event Manager. Oversee the supervision of the administrative support team, student assistants, vendors, and marketing/communications consultants as needed.
D. QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education and Experience
BA/BS required, JD or advanced degree in related field preferred.
8-10 years of direct fundraising and/or transferrable professional skills that include sales/marketing and/or developing relationships with high-net-worth clients or customers.
Experience in higher education, including law school administration, preferred.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Direct knowledge of development programs.
Direct knowledge of successful fundraising best practices.
Knowledge of higher education advancement preferred.
Must be a goal oriented and self-motivated individual who can demonstrate accountability, initiative, creativity and focus in a rapidly changing and intellectually stimulating environment.
Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate, build alliances, and achieve results within a population that may possess competing interests, opinions, and /or expectations.

Required to have a valid driver's license and personal transportation vehicle available for frequent travel to business meetings (mileage is reimbursed under federal guidelines). Demonstrate a level of comfort working and communicating with top executives, community leaders and/or university leadership. Ability to motivate, build long term relationships with and gain the respect of internal and external clients.
Demonstrate the ability to manage time and workload to multitask and achieve goals in a deadline driven environment.

3. General Guidelines
Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools, planned training and performance initiatives.
Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all operational functions. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.
